Art & Architecture on Naoshima Island

About a year ago, one of our former colleagues told me about this ‘art island’ in Japan and I immediately added it to my bucket list for our travels through Japan. As it’s not too far from Hiroshima, it was a no brainer that we should go and visit. Below are some tips for you,…

Miyajima Island

Ever since I started researching the best places to visit in Japan, Miyajima Island with its floating red torii gate caught my eye and I was so grateful that we could easily visit the island by train and ferry from Hiroshima. We left Hiroshima early at around 8 a.m., but not early enough to get…

Hiroshima, a city of history and beauty

It‘s day four of our spring break holidays and after spending three cold days in Fukuoka by the sea, we finally arrived in beautiful, sunny Hiroshima. On first impression, it had already surpassed my expectations and charmed us with beautiful tree lined streets. Those streets that many people thought would not grow any plants again…

Spring has arrived in Yokohama (or is it Summer now..?)

The weather in Yokohama is so similar to the one in Shanghai – one day you’re cold and wondering whether to turn another heater on, and the next day you’re not just ditching your jacket, but also applying sunscreen. One of the things I feel so grateful about is being able to go for a…

Art Deco & ultra fashion in Meguro

Christmas is always the busiest seasons of them all! Which is my excuse of only writing about our little adventure in Meguro now. After having visited the Hida Takayama Museum of Art on holiday in the Japanese Alps, we rediscovered our love for art deco. As we read about the French art deco exhibition at…

Tokyo Photography Walk: Tsukishima & Tsukuda

22°C sunshine on a beautiful November day in Tokyo! That just calls for exploring one of Tokyo’s ‘best towns’ (according to Metropolis) Tsukishima and neighbouring Tsukada. An autumn stroll along the river at Tsukuda Park lifted our weekend mood and brought us deeper into Tsukishima, exploring little alleys and tasting the local food in Tsukishima’s…

The Japanese Alps & Beyond

Seeing photos of the autumn foliage in the Japanese Alps made our decision on where to go in late October very easy! Matsumoto seemed like the perfect place to start, as it’s just a 3-hour train ride away from Yokohama and a perfect base for day trips and getting deeper into the Japanese Alps. Our highlight at the end of our trip was visiting the Gassho (thatched roof) Villages in and around Shirakawa-Go and staying in a traditional guesthouse in the mountains.

Rainy days at Yokohama English Garden

Just a few hours before the last typhoon hit Yokohama, we headed to the Yokohama English Garden and were surprised by a rain shower. The garden was almost empty due to the weather, but a few other people were as crazy as us, taking photos of the flowers covered in raindrops. It’s actually quite challenging…

Lantern Festival in Kamakura

Kamakura is an ancient city famous for its’ beaches and temples, especially the Giant Buddha (Daibutsu). Our first time to visit Kamakura marked the day of the lantern festival, and after watching a beautiful sunset on the beach, we headed to the temples. Goryo Shrine is located closest to the beach and situated right next…

Minatomirai – beautiful in the day, spectacular at night

Minatomirai 21 is Yokohama’s new urban central business district and probably the most popular place for sightseeing in Yokohama. The name ‘Minatomirai 21’ was selected in a public poll and means ‘Port of the future in the 21st century’. It’s the perfect place for shopping, relaxing, photography strolls, visiting museums and even for a roller…
