The Iconic Autumn Shot of Mount Fuji at Kawaguchiko

While snowy landscapes already reminisce of Christmas around some parts of the world, temperatures around Yokohama and Tokyo are still fairly mild and we’re enjoying the vibrant autumn foliage all around us. For deep red maple foliage, Lake Kawaguchi is just the most stunning place nearby, especially as you get Mount Fuji looking more majestic than ever, covered with just the perfect amount of snow on the top.

If you’re wondering where to get THE iconic shot of Mount Fuji in front of Lake Kawaguchi and momiji (red maple leaves), search no further! My top recommendation is to head over to the north side of the lake to take incredible photos of Mount Fuji with autumn foliage. This is the GoogleMaps link to the most breathtaking Mount Fuji Momiji spot. You’re welcome! When I visited with a friend at the end of November, we had beautiful clear skies every day with full views of Fuji-san. いいね!

Tips for taking awesome photos of Mount Fuji around Lake Kawaguchi

1 – Is Autumn at Kawaguchiko The Best Season?

I’ve visited Lake Kawaguchi three times and late November was my favourite. The autumn colours around the lake are very picturesque, there’s a high chance of clear skies promising perfect Mount Fuji views, and the weather is still fairly mild. These conditions also carry through the most part of December, which also makes for a great time to visit. To be honest, any season is nice around the lake, but let’s be honest – most tourists come to see Mount Fuji and during other parts of the year you might be unlucky and not see it at all! Kawaguchiko is easy to reach by train from Tokyo and Yokohama, so if you have a flexible schedule, keep an eye on the live cameras to check if it’s the ideal time to visit.

2 – Embark On A Bike Ride Around The Lake

By cycling around the lake (especially on old rusty bikes provided for free by most guesthouses around Kawaguchiko), you get a chance to explore each area at a slow pace and find the best Mount Fuji photo spots. One of my favourite spots has actually been a paved mini hike below yellow ginkgo trees and random benches right by the lake under maple trees with no other people around, as they look nondescript on GoogleMaps. Breathe in the fresh autumn air while riding your bike and enjoy the magnificent Fuji-san views alongside!

3 – How to Avoid The Crowds

It’s worth paying for entrance fees at some of the museums with outdoor areas, such as the absolutely remarkable (and my favourite in all of Japan) Kubota Itchiku Art Museum. Once you’re inside, you can enjoy strolling through Japanese gardens with seasonal hues and Mount Fuji views without the crowds. Also, just stopping at random spots along the lake rather than going to the well-known spots like Oishi Park, which are just overcrowded and make it not particularly fun to visit. Another top tip to see Japan without crowds in general is to get up at the crack of dawn (do get up super early, it’s worth it!) and enjoy sights on your own. I noticed that especially in touristy areas it usually seems to get super busy from about 11am.

4 – Is Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway Worth Visiting?

Due to its proximity to Kawaguchiko Station, I heard that you can expect extremely long lines at this major sight. However, when we visited on a Saturday just one hour before closing time (around 4pm), there was only a short wait. I would highly recommend this activity – if you’re in good shape you can also hike up the small mountain leading up to absolutely scenic panoramas of Mount Fuji at Tenjozan Park. It’s also worth checking the ropeway’s opening times on the official website.

I hope these tips helped you to make the most of the autumn foliage season at Lake Kawaguchi. Would you like more travel tips for Kawaguchiko? Leave us a comment below!
